Chapter Seventeen

The entrance was part of the L-shaped kitchen. The door opened into the short side and each side had narrow counters with thin cabinets above and below. The counter on their right was made of wood, and if Mandy wasn’t mistaken, it was a magical wood that looked similar to wormy walnut but was almost fatal to werewolves and other shapeshifters who might have bad intentions toward the owner. The counter on their left side was metal. Looked to be typical stainless found in big kitchens like at restaurants, hotels, and the like, but not so much in residential ones. Of course, looking around at the place, Elvira’s tastes definitely ran toward the eccentric and eclectic side of things.

Jonathan walked inside first, and gagged. He covered his mouth and nose with a hand, doubling over almost instantly. Mandy paused just inside the doorway, catching a whiff of the nasty odor as she reached to close the door. Moving close to the opening, she took a deep, stomach-settling breath as her mind raced to identify the awful stench.

Jonathan stood straight, tried for a smile, didn’t quite make it and bent forward again. Breathing through his mouth, he turned agonized eyes toward Mandy and shook his head as he gripped the rounded edge of the metal counter tightly in both hands. “I can’t do it,” he said in a halting cadence.

Elvira had already moved into the long working kitchen where the smell emanated from. She turned upon hearing Jonathan’s words. Holding her hands away from herself and anything that might be sullied by the black goop on her fingers, she eyed him with something that looked almost like pity.

Mandy covered her nose and mouth, leaned forward, and put a hand on Jonathan’s shoulder. She wanted to explain that it was just rancid because it was a potion that used the skin of a swamp demon—they reeked when they had their skin on, but once it was off and in the potion which Elvira was kneading with her bare hands...it was truly gut-wrenching. She couldn’t blame Jonathan for being unable to withstand it.

“The smell isn’t just causing me to be nauseous,” he said, trying not to breathe, “it’s causing me to have pains in my stomach and chest.” He let go of the counter and wrapped one arm over his midsection and put the other hand back over his nose and mouth. He looked at Mandy and gagged. “I’m sorry. I think I’ll just,” he said as he moved back outside the door, “wait out here and deal with this nausea.”

Mandy nodded and stepped out with him for a moment. She felt bad for him, but she couldn’t pass up the chance to talk to Elvira about Philip.

He took a deep breath and some color came back to his face. He shuddered. “Nope. I can’t go back inside. I’m sorry, Mandy.”

“It’s okay. It’s fine. I won’t be long, and if anything happens, you’re right here.” She leaned close. “I think she’s on the level, though.
